With this project we started by choosing a quote that related to graphic design. After choosing the quote, "Design isn't just about making stuff, it's about making stuff happen" with my partner Taylor, we moved into the design iterations. This was the first challenging aspect of the project. With only limited type in the press room it, there was a steady push and pull between finding the right typeface and making it fit into the right layout. With these restrictions we changed our final layout multiple times to get the right fit. The most difficult part of of the project by far was setting the type itself. On the first layout Taylor and I worked for almost three hours before it was ready to print. After the first prints were made we experienced the difficulties of operation a machine by hand with hand set type. There were lots of little imperfections. Everything from crooked lines to misplaces apostrophes. On our second go we really got into the rhythm of printing and everything became much simpler. Formally, we used Futura and Century Schoolbook. We used a variety of colored papers. My favorite piece of the project was my experiment card that used the impression of a previously inked postcard while being printed on the other. After this project I have a much greater appreciation for the work that goes into using the letter press and it's something I look forward to using in my work in the future.o.
